We will have pit toilets and porta-johns available, as well as trash, on-site. You are expected to pack your own food and water and be generally self-sufficient if you are camping with us, though we expect a few food vendors to stop by as well.

The venue is a 35 minute drive from Missoula, MT where there is access to grocery stores, restaurants, hotels, etc.

NO. We cannot accomodate rv hookups, and space for large trailers is very limited. You MUST fit in your camping space or purchase an additional space.

If you would like to have the use of hookups, or have a large RV, there are a number of RV parks in the area, including:

    • Livingston/Paradise Valley KOA
    • Livingston RV Park and Campground
    • Osens RV Park and Campground
    • Rock Canyon RV Park

We can’t guarantee availability at these campsites, so we encourage you to make reservations as soon as possible.

At its core, it’s a reason for fellow travelers, outdoor recreationists, campers and vehicle enthusiasts to get together and celebrate the overlanding community. It’s also an opportunity to showcase the beautiful state of Montana (the “Big Sky State”), its outdoor recreation opportunities and its local businesses.

With vendors, non-profits, classes and on-site camping, there will be something there for everyone. The Big Sky Overland Rally is about learning opportunities, inspiration, friends, and sharing our love of adventure travel and the outdoors.

The annual event will feature a trade show area with vendors, manufacturers, outfitters and non-profit organizations. Class offerings will include vehicle-based topics such as off-road driving, repair, recovery as well as more expansive topics like international travel and fly-fishing. Several women-specific classes will be available in a variety of these topics. Attendees can also participate in guided trail runs, social events and prize drawings.

Explore the world of vehicle based travel and take your outdoor adventures to the next level at the Big Sky Overland Rally this summer.

There are many accommodation options in and around Missoula. There are a large number of hotels and airbnbs as well as established RV sites and campsites to choose from. Book early, as summer is a popular time to visit Montana. There is also significant areas of public land around the venue for those who prefer dispersed camping.

If you are traveling with a large RV, we suggest one of the several RV campsites around Bozeman.

Due to the number of people in attendance, the dry summer conditions in Montana and to avoid damaging the land we are using for this event, campfires are not allowed at this event. Cooking must be done using propane or similar fuel (no charcoal) on a surface elevated off the ground. Please do not leave your food unattended while it is cooking.

We appreciate your help in preventing fires.

No! The Big Sky Overland Rally is about sharing our love of the outdoors. Overlanding isn’t just about driving, it’s about traveling further and in a more self-sufficient way so you can experience more of what you love – whether that’s sight-seeing, hiking, fly-fishing, rock-climbing, wheeling, or just about anything. Most of us were introduced to the Overlanding community from our passion for other outdoor activities, because driving and camping are a big part of those activities. Our goal is to make the journey just as awesome as the things you do when you get there, and to help you access even more incredible, remote places to do those things.

We hope you’ll be inspired by not just the vehicles, but also the people and their stories.

Overland Journal summed it up quite nicely:

Overlanding describes self-reliant adventure travel to remote destinations where the journey is the primary goal. Typically, but not exclusively, accommodated by mechanized off-highway capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping; often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and often spanning international boundaries. While expedition is defined as a journey with a purpose, overlanding sees the journey as the purpose.

No! In fact you don’t need a vehicle at all to enjoy the rally. Our goal is to bring together people of all background and experience levels. We see all kinds of different methods of travel at these events, and it’s a great place to get and share ideas whether you haven’t even started yet or you’ve been doing this for decades.

Of course, some of the optional trail runs do require a vehicle, however some of the other attendees are usually very welcoming in letting you hop in the passenger seat.
